Doherty revealed in February 2016 that she was undergoing anti-estrogen treatment to shrink the tumor and allow for lumpectomy rather than mastectomy treatment. A lumpectomy was not possible due to the presence of multiple tumors, so a single mastectomy was performed in May 2016.
During surgery, it was discovered that some of the cancer cells had spread beyond the lymph nodes. Doherty underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy after surgery because the cancer was more advanced than previously thought. Doherty made the announcement on April 29, 2017. Doherty announced her cancer was in remission on April 29, 2017. Doherty announced on February 4, 2020, that her cancer had returned a year before and that she is now in stage four.
