Sarah Montague Career

It was Sarah’s first radio broadcast when she joined the Today programme. She had previously worked in television, having joined the BBC in 1997 for the launch of BBC News 24. When then-editor Rod Liddle approached her about presenting the show, it came as a complete surprise. However, she seized the opportunity to do “exactly what I want to be doing.” She majored in biology at Bristol University before beginning a career in finance with NatWest in London, first as a private client stockbroker and then in Eurobond sales.

She knew the city was not for her, so she went traveling for a year before starting a business in mail-order shirts with a friend. The company survived, but not the friendship or Sarah’s job. So, at the age of 24, after being fired twice, she decided to follow her heart and try to break into radio current affairs. With no luck finding work, she approached her local television newsroom in Guernsey and asked if she could come in and make tea for free for a few weeks.

Sarah worked as a reporter and presenter for Channel Television in both Guernsey and Jersey for three years. She moved to London in 1994 to work as a freelance television news reporter before joining Reuters for a daily business program. She moved on to Sky News in January 1996 as a business presenter. The BBC approached her in 1997 and asked her to be one of the presenters at the launch of its new BBC news channel, BBC News 24. Despite her desire to work more normal hours, she agreed to present the breakfast show earlier in the morning.

She has presented many BBC television news programs since joining the corporation, including BBC Two’s Newsnight, BBC One’s Breakfast with Frost, BBC Breakfast news, and BBC One news bulletins. Along with Today, she continues to host BBC World’s Hardtalk, on which she has interviewed world leaders as well as rock stars.
