Following graduation, he joined the Peace Corps and spent three years serving in Togo and Burkina Faso. While in Burkina Faso, he began freelancing for the BBC World Service and eventually relocated to London, where he developed the BBC show Network Africa. “Radio impressed me in Africa,” In 1990, he returned to the United States and founded WCFE-FM in Plattsburgh, New York, where he hosted a daily two-hour news and public affairs program for four years. He relocated to Rome, Italy, in 1994 to work as Monitor Radio’s correspondent. In 1995, he was recruited to help create the format for The World, where he has worked since.

In 1997, he began producing the Global Hit section, which connects musicians and global musical trends and serves as a lens through which to interpret news. This segment has also become a popular podcast as part of the PRI News series. Werman has received awards from the National Federation of Community Broadcasters for an original radio drama he wrote, the Sony Awards for an exposé on child labor in West African gold mines, the New York Festivals for a BBC documentary on Burkina Faso’s president’s assassination in 1987, and the Radio-Television News Directors Association’s first annual Unity award for diversity coverage.

Werman also hosts and reports on the PBS music series “Sound Tracks: Music Without Borders,” which he co-created with PBS producer Stephen Talbot. The pilot premiered in 2010. A new episode aired on PBS in October 2012. He has also presented and interviewed Jovanotti, Seu Jorge, Charles Bradley, Milos Karadaglic, and Levon Helm for the PBS Arts online series “Sound Tracks presents Quick Hits”. Werman was also the host of BBC World Service’s “Boston Calling,” which investigated how the world appears to Americans and the numerous and unexpected ways in which the globe influences the United States. The final episode aired on June 27, 2020.
