Jones made his film debut in the 1979 romantic comedy picture 10. His participation in 10 allowed him to beat out Kurt Russell and Arnold Schwarzenegger for the role of Flash Gordon in the 1980 film of the same name. For this part, Jones’ hair was bleached blonde. The picture was a minor box office success, collecting $27.1 million in North America and $22 million in the United Kingdom, more than doubling its $20 million budget. However, a quarrel between Jones and producer Dino De Laurentiis resulted in the cancellation of a planned film trilogy. Jones then starred in and executive produced Life After Flash, a feature-length documentary about Flash Gordon that was crowdfunded. The documentary, which features interviews with fans and members of the original film’s cast and crew, including Melody Anderson, Brian Blessed, Peter Wyngarde, Mark Millar, Robert Rodriguez, Stan Lee, and Brian May, also examines how Jones’ feud with De Laurentiis affected his life and career.
