Sam J. Jones Career

Jones made his film debut in the 1979 romantic comedy picture 10. His participation in 10 allowed him to beat out Kurt Russell and Arnold Schwarzenegger for the role of Flash Gordon in the 1980 film of the same name. For this part, Jones’ hair was bleached blonde. The picture was a minor box office success, collecting $27.1 million in North America and $22 million in the United Kingdom, more than doubling its $20 million budget. However, a quarrel between Jones and producer Dino De Laurentiis resulted in the cancellation of a planned film trilogy. Following the premiere of Flash Gordon, Playgirl reproduced his 1975 nude photo spread in its January 1981 issue, using his true name this time.

In 1987, he starred in a television adaption of Will Eisner’s comic book character The Spirit. He also starred as the title character in the NBC sci-fi series The Highwayman. He played Johnny Valentine on HBO’s 1st & Ten in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Jones appeared in the direct-to-video films Jungle Heat (1985), Jane and the Lost City (1987), Under the Gun (1988), Silent Assassins (1988), Whiteface (1988), Driving Force (1989), and One Man Force (1989). Jones appeared in films such as In Gold We Trust (1990), Maximum Force (1992), Fist of Honour (1993), Hard Vice (1994), Enter the Shootfighter (1995), Texas Payback (1995), The Killer Inside (1996), and Earth Minus One (1997) during the 1990s.

Jones was cast as a park ranger in Animal Planet’s family series Hollywood Safari in 2001. He featured in the episode “Deadman Switch” of the television series Stargate SG-1. Jones retrained in 2002 and now works as a high-end security specialist in San Diego, protecting businesspeople travelling to Mexico when he is not performing or working autograph booths on the ComicCon circuit. “I became a security professional 15 years ago,” he says. ‘You’ve been waiting for the phone to ring,’ my wife replied to me. The phone does not ring. We have children. There’s a door there. ‘Do not return until you have provided.’ That’s why I abandoned labels years ago. Actor? I’m a hard worker. I’m a working man who will do whatever it takes to offer.”

He portrayed the prisoner Krebb in the Sci-Fi Channel original television series Flash Gordon in 2007. He also appeared in both the 2012 comedy picture Ted and its 2015 sequel, Ted 2, in extended cameos (as himself, with his blond Flash Gordon wig). Jones then starred in and executive produced Life After Flash, a feature-length documentary about Flash Gordon that was crowdfunded. The documentary, which features interviews with fans and members of the original film’s cast and crew, including Melody Anderson, Brian Blessed, Peter Wyngarde, Mark Millar, Robert Rodriguez, Stan Lee, and Brian May, also examines how Jones’ feud with De Laurentiis affected his life and career.
