She appeared as Clare Bellew in the 2021 black-and-white romantic drama film Passing. Irene Redfield, a light-skinned black woman living in Harlem in the 1920s, meets a childhood friend, Clare Bellew. While Irene marries a Black doctor, Clare “passes” as white and marries a wealthy white man named John. Clare becomes involved in all aspects of Irene’s life, accompanying her to all of Irene and Brian’s outings. Irene attempts to warn Clare but abandons her attempt when she is unable to reach her by phone. John storms into the apartment, demanding to see Clare, who remains calm.
He accuses her of being a “dirty liar” and lunges at her, at which point Irene abruptly crosses Clare’s pelvis. Clare falls out the window, but it’s unclear whether she was pushed by John or Irene, or if she committed suicide. The film concludes with the police declaring death by accident, Irene sobbing in Brian’s arms, and medics carrying Clare’s body away.
