Ron Magers Career

Magers began his broadcasting career as a high school student in Toppenish, Washington, hosting radio shows as a part-time employee. He began his professional television career in 1965 as a reporter and news contributor for KEZI-TV in Eugene, Oregon. Later, at KGW-TV in Portland, Oregon, he produced and anchored the 11 p.m. newscast (1967-68). Magers worked as a reporter and anchor for KPIX-TV in San Francisco, California, from 1968 to 1974. In 1971, he also hosted a Group W 30-minute weekly nationally syndicated program called “Ron Magers Electric Impressions.”From 1974 through 1981, Magers worked as the primary anchor for KSTP-TV, the ABC (previously NBC) affiliate in Minneapolis-Saint Paul. Later, he was joined by co-anchor Cyndy Brucato.

Magers co-anchored WMAQ-TV’s newscasts at 5, 6, and 10 p.m. from 1981 until 1997. When Magers and her co-anchor Carol Marin left Channel 5 in early May 1997, they made national headlines. The decision to depart was made in response to the station’s choice to hire Jerry Springer as a commentator for the 10:00 p.m. newscasts. WMAQ management granted both anchors early termination from their contracts. Both thought that having Springer on the show would have given it an unnecessary tabloid aspect. Springer only contributed two commentaries before leaving his role as a writer. Magers joined WLS as a 5:00 p.m. anchor alongside Diann Burns in 1998. After long-time anchor John Drury retired in 2002, he became co-host of the 10:00 p.m. newscasts.

Magers has been a feature segment and commentator on The Roe Conn Show on WLS (AM) since 1997, with a brief hiatus in 2009/10 due to the bankruptcy of WLS’s parent company. He was rehired once the station was sold.  Magers announced his retirement from ABC on May 25, 2016, with a last late-night newscast featuring tributes from employees and colleagues. Alan Krashesky took over for Magers at 5:00 p.m., alongside Cheryl Burton, and at 6:00 and 10:00 p.m., alongside Kathy Brock. Magers has received a number of honors, including six Chicago Emmys, a Peter Lisagor Award, and a National Press Club commendation. He has also received an Associated Press award, an Illinois Broadcasters Association award, and the Ohio State Award.
