Claiborne worked as a reporter and editor for the United Press International wire service in the late 1970s. Claiborne began his career with ABC News in 1986 as a general assignment journalist located in Boston, where he frequently reported and contributed to World News, Nightline, and Good Morning America.
He covered a wide range of stories for ABC News, including the legalization of gay marriage in Massachusetts, the Boston Catholic Church scandal in 2002, the Elian Gonzales custody battle, the Yugoslavia conflict in Belgrade, the Persian Gulf War, and Senator John McCain’s campaign in both the 1992 and 2008 presidential elections. In September 2018, Claiborne announced his retirement from ABC News and Good Morning America. Claiborne won an Emmy in 2000 for his coverage of Elian Gonzales’ arrest in Miami.
