Her broadcasting career began in Virginia, where an internship during her junior year at Hollins College led to a full-time position as the first female reporter for WDBJ TV, a CBS affiliate in Roanoke. She established a State Capitol Bureau for the station in Richmond. She was employed by ABC News in 1973 and reported from New York City until December 1974, when she was sent to the White House. Compton traveled around the world and through all 50 states with presidents, vice presidents, and first ladies during seven presidential campaigns while reporting for ABC News, and as a White House correspondent, she covered seven presidents, beginning with Gerald Ford. Compton became the first woman assigned to cover the White House on a full-time basis by a network television news organization, and she was one of the youngest to receive the assignment.

She was invited to serve as a panelist for presidential debates twice during campaigns (1988 and 1992), and she was appointed as a floor reporter at the Republican and Democratic national conventions in 1976. Compton was the ABCNEWS.com main Washington correspondent in 2000, where she wrote and hosted a daily political column called “On Background.” During the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Compton, along with other reporters, was covering US President George W. Bush’s trip to Florida to promote his education plan. Compton was aboard Air Force One as the assaults unfolded, and the plane flew from Florida to other parts of the country after the President was urged not to return to Washington.
