Rick Owens DRKSHDW – Labels

Rick Owens, DRKSHDW, Rick Owens Lilies, Slab (Defunct), and HUNRICKOWENS were among his five labels (previously “Palais Royal”). He collaborated with Birkenstock in 2018 and Veja, a French sneaker brand, in 2019. The latter collaboration lasted five seasons, with the end date set for November 2021. In 2020, Owens will add to this list of collaborations by designing capsules with Moncler and American activewear brand Champion. According to a 2017 interview with WWD, the brand made $120 million the previous year. In the same interview, Owens stated that his label intended to remain independent of corporate investment. Owens dedicated his 2019 fashion show to Larry LeGaspi, whom he regards as his creative forefather. Gaspi debuted in his fall and winter 2019 women’s runway collection.

Rick Owens Dunk

Owens debuted these sneakers in his Fall/Winter 2006 collection “Dustulator,” alongside an unreleased “Cut-Out” women-exclusive version of the Dunks, which were made famous by Russian supermodel Sasha Pivoravova, who wore them in a photoshoot. Due to the scarcity of these samples, existing pairs have commanded exorbitant resell prices. The sides of these Dunks feature a distinctive detail resembling the Nike Swoosh, a reversed rendition of the Puma stripe, and Adidas’ three stripes as a stitching detail behind the “swoosh” applique. The Shearling/Nubuck Dunk debuted in the SS06 collection, followed by the “Dustulator” Dunk in the FW06 collection. According to legend, Nike sent a cease-and-desist letter to the designer in order to halt production of the Dunks, and Owens later stated in an interview that the letter made him “swoon.”

Since then, his runway collections have been displayed in Paris. Owens and Michèle Lamy founded their own fashion company, Owenscorp, in 2004, and described their partnership as “asking a gypsy to organize a war with a fascist.”
