He was a regular on The Project. Van Onselen took over as co-host of The Sunday Project in January 2020, with Hamish Macdonald becoming the anchor of Q&A on ABC. Van Onselen stepped down as co-host of The Sunday Project 18 months later but remained Network 10 Political Editor and The Project co-host.
On January 25, 2022, Project co-host Carrie Bickmore confronted Van Onselen over an article he wrote on 2021 Australian of the Year Grace Tame. He called her behavior “childish” after witnessing her apparently purposeful refusal to smile for press shots with Prime Minister Scott Morrison in Canberra. Van Onselen took on a fourth hosting role at Sky News in July 2016, presenting the morning show Sunday Edition. but left the position in February 2017. In October 2017, it was reported that van Onselen would step down from all of his Sky News programs in order to become a Sky News contributing editor and to resurrect The Contrarians as a weekly format. However, it was later revealed that van Onselen had departed Sky News when his contract expired at the end of 2017.
