Paul Kemsley Bankruptcy

Kemsley filed for bankruptcy in March 2012, stating $34k in monthly costs and personal debts ranging from $10M to $50M, with creditors including Spreadex, HMRC, HBOS, and Joe Lewis. However, Barclays Bank is still suing him in the United States for a £5 million loan. The United States Bankruptcy Court first ruled against the trustee who had filed for chapter 15 bankruptcy in March 2013. Judge Peck refused Kemsley’s application, describing him as a “bankrupt who doesn’t live like one.” However, Peck denied Barclay’s claim two months later in state court, claiming that Barclays had essentially mousetrapped themselves by extending the loan to Kemsley.

Kemsley is well-known for his friendship with Mike Ashley, David Pearl, Sir Philip Green, and Lord Sugar. Kemsley’s acquaintance with Sugar enabled him to play a role in the ENIC/Levy partnership’s purchase of a majority stake in Tottenham Hotspur. Kemsley later worked as an interviewer/adviser for Lord Sugar on the UK BBC edition of The Apprentice from 2005 to 2008, but resigned after Rock collapsed. He explained that he left because his position no longer made sense after his bankruptcy: “People were bound to question, ‘Who are you to interview anyone?’ ‘You’ve just gone bankrupt.'”
