He applied to Intel in Santa Clara, California, where one of his friends worked, but also because it was in the heart of Silicon Valley, where he hoped to find cool startups. He joined Intel in June 1998 but was dissatisfied with the company’s large and bureaucratic environment, so he began sending his resume to a handful of local startups he had heard about. He had been working with Linux since before college and became interested in Google after reading on Slashdot that it was building clusters of Linux machines.

He also [vaguely] suggested what would become AdSense. After leaving Google in 2006, Buchheit co-founded FriendFeed, which debuted in 2007 with partner Bret Taylor. FriendFeed was acquired by Facebook in a private transaction in 2009, and Buchheit became a Facebook employee as a result. He continues to manage his own angel investments in “about 40” companies.
In June 1999, he joined Google and began working on the Google Groups project, a web-based discussion groups service, as well as indexing the Usenet service. He told Triplebyte that he created the first version of the “did you mean?” feature after discovering that he was “not the only person who can’t spell” while looking through search query logs. In August 2001, Google co-founder Larry Page sat him down and told him to “build an email something,” which led to the creation of what is now Gmail. He had previously developed a web-based email system as a college class project in 1996 after becoming frustrated with the inability to access his emails from his dormitory room.
