Husain began her career in journalism when she was 18 years old when she worked for three months as a city reporter for the English-language newspaper The News in Islamabad, Pakistan. Then, as part of her university work experience, she did several stints at the BBC. Her first job was as a producer and presenter at Bloomberg Television in London, where she worked from 1996 to 2000. She joined the BBC as a junior producer in the newsroom and for the News 24 channel two years later, in 1998, and then in the Economics and Business Unit.

She moved in front of the camera within a few months and has since worked in a variety of roles, including the daily Breakfast programme, Asia Business Report, and as a business news presenter on both BBC World News and BBC News Channel. She was the corporation’s Washington correspondent from September 2002 to September 2004, serving as the main news anchor during the build-up to the invasion of Iraq and during the war.
