Fishman’s acting career began when he met Roseanne Barr at an early audition. She requested him to tell her a joke. He said, “Why did the turtle cross the road?” This was the chicken’s day off.” She was impressed, and despite his lack of experience, Barr lobbied to cast Fishman as D.J. Conner. He worked on Roseanne from the age of six till fifteen.
On April 28, 2017, it was stated that an eight-episode revival of Roseanne was in the works and being pitched to multiple networks, featuring the majority of the original primary cast. However, it remained unclear whether Fishman would resume his role as D.J. Conner. Fishman continued to act while attending Orange County High School of the Arts at Los Alamitos High School, where he studied Musical Theatre and Technical Theater. He featured as a guest on Walker, Texas Ranger, and Seinfeld before landing a recurring part on Hitz with Andrew Dice Clay just before the show was canceled. Fishman also appeared in other films, including Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence. He then reconnected with Barr as a co-host on The Roseanne Show, which aired for two years before being canceled in 2000.
