Martin Seemungal Career

After joining the network in 2000, Seemungal was headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya for ABC in 2003. He covered the Ebola virus outbreak in Uganda, flooding in Mozambique, starvation in Malawi, and a terrorist attack in Mombasa on Israeli visitors. From 1991 to 2006, Seemungal worked as an Africa correspondent for both CBC News (Canada) and ABC News (US). He was based in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Nairobi throughout that time. He has reported from Uganda, South Africa, Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, India, Afghanistan, Yemen, Israel, and Kuwait. In 2003, he received the DuPont Award from Columbia University and was nominated for a Gemini Award for “Best Television Reporting” for his coverage of the Rwanda Exodus.

He earned two Emmy Awards, one for his series on Congo for ABC’s Nightline in 2002 and the other for his coverage of the Darfur crises for ABC World News Tonight in 2004. He has also been nominated for two Emmy Awards, one for his coverage of the 2002 Congo Volcano explosion, which aired on World News Tonight. He joined CTV News as a Middle East correspondent in January 2011. On January 23, 2011, he submitted his first report in this role. Seemungal returned to CTV after previously working for the network in Ottawa from 1984 to 1988. Seemingal joined PBS in 2014 as a special correspondent for the PBS NewsHour.
