Mark Wilson Career

Mark, a Florida State University graduate, worked as a regional correspondent for NBC at WNCN in Raleigh, NC in the mid-1990s. He joined WTVT in 1997, fulfilling a lifelong dream of working alongside his father, WTVT anchor John Wilson, who has been dubbed the ‘Walter Cronkite of Tampa Bay’ after a career spanning more than 50 years in Norfolk, VA, Charlotte, NC, St. Louis, MO, and Tampa/St. Pete, FL. Mark was hired by FOX in 2005 to anchor and launch WTVT’s first 11 p.m. newscast (since becoming a FOX affiliate) and took over as anchor for WTVT’s 5 p.m. newscast in 2010. On November 5, 2014, his father, John Wilson, announced that Mark would take over the WTVT newscasts at 6 and 10 p.m.

Mark is an enthusiastic rock guitarist with a varied musical background. He grew up playing the violin and singing in his mother’s church choirs, but he was heavily influenced by Eddie Van Halen later in life. Mark has composed and recorded several songs for independent films, and he frequently auctions off some of his custom guitars at Wilson Van benefit concerts and other community events. Mark, his brothers Paul Wilson and actor/singer Patrick Wilson, as well as brother-in-law Charles Tillman, get together several times a year to perform in their rock band The Wilson Van, raising money for their favorite Tampa Bay area charities.

Since then, the Wilson Van has performed charity shows for Academy Prep at 3 Daughters Brewing in St. Pete on August 16, 2014, Club Detroit in May 2013 to raise money for the Gold Shield Foundation, which provides scholarships to families of fallen first responders, and the State Theater in St. Pete in May 2012 to raise money for Southeastern Guide Dogs’ Paws for Patriots program, which provides guide dogs to blind or injured veterans. The Wilson brothers rarely have time to practice for their events, so they rely on their iPhones to collaborate via iMessage and Skype. In 2012, Mark joined his brother Patrick on stage at the Gershwin Theatre to perform Sammy Hagar’s “Eagles Fly” for the Broadway Blows Back benefit for Hurricane Sandy victims.
