He then worked as a chief of staff for Democratic Party-affiliated Connecticut Senate members, as well as communications director for John DeStefano Jr. Slap joined the UConn Foundation as vice president of external relations in 2014. Slap won a special election in 2019 and has since served in the Connecticut State Senate from District 5.After sitting legislator Brian Becker announced his retirement in May 2016, the Democratic Party nominated Slap as its candidate for Connecticut House of Representatives District 19.

In the general election, Slap ran against Republican Party candidate Chris Barnes. In November 2018, Slap ran unopposed for re-election to the state house. After Beth Bye was appointed to Ned Lamont’s gubernatorial administration, Slap ran for her Connecticut Senate District 5 seat. In the special election, Slap ran against Bill Wadsworth, Jeffrey Przech, and Mark Stewart Greenstein. On March 1, 2019, Slap was sworn in as a state senator.[10] In the Connecticut Senate, Slap rose to the position of deputy majority leader. The Democratic Party endorsed Slap’s re-election to the state senate in 2020. On November 3, 2020, Slap defeated Republican challenger Phillip Chabot in the general election.
