Flavors of My World: A Culinary Tour Through 25 Countries, her debut cookbook, was released by Favorite Recipes Press, an imprint of Nashville-based Southwestern Publishing Group. She promoted the book with a 21-city bus tour across the United States, and it was named one of the Cookbooks of the Year. Her other book, The Journey (electronic, Alta Editions), co-authored with Katy Sparks, Alex Raij, Rita Sodi, and Kathleen Squires, earned the International Association of Culinary Professionals 2014 prize. She got her start in the culinary industry at the WelcomGroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration of Manipal University in Manipal, India. There, she earned a bachelor’s degree in hotel management and graduated at the top of her class. After that, she went to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, where she graduated with all of the class awards. She worked in India as an apprentice chef for the Oberoi Group, Taj Group, Welcome Group, and Sheraton Group.
She was hired as management for a new restaurant in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, right after she graduated in 2000. There, she led a team and increased the restaurant’s seating capacity from 70 to 140. She was hired as the opening executive chef of Vermilion in Chicago, Illinois, in 2003, when she was 27 years old. The Chicago Tribune gave her three stars for her work. She moved to New York City in 2007 to open At Vermilion, for which Time Out Magazine selected her as the “Best Import to New York.” Her style is said to be “global fusion,” and her inspiration comes from Indian cuisine.
President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama invited Chauhan to the White House for the 2014 Easter Egg Roll Hunt. She is also an invited member of Indiaspora, which held its first Forum in September 2012 and welcomed 100 influential Indian American leaders. The purpose of the three-day Forum events was to invigorate the community and give it a voice to express its collective objectives.
