Mama Dragun received backlash in February 2017 after appearing in an ad campaign for Jeffree Star’s Androgyny makeup line, which featured her alongside other LGBT models. She posted a photo of herself from the ad campaign to her Instagram account, in which her face appeared significantly darker than usual. This sparked outrage on the internet against Jeffree Star, who had previously been accused of racism. Critics questioned why he did not hire an African-American model and instead blackfaced an Asian model. In the aftermath of the controversy, she attempted to defend herself by claiming that because she is half-Mexican and half-Asian, her skin naturally darkens when she tans.

Nguyen first appeared on YouTube in February 2013. She said, “Around that time, I began to receive small brand deals… That’s also when I decided to take Instagram and YouTube more seriously.” She came out as transgender in 2015, when she was living in Los Angeles. She has over 3.54 million YouTube subscribers, 9 million Instagram followers, and 14.5 million TikTok followers as of October 2021. Nguyen responded to L Brands chief marketing officer Ed Razek’s comments that trans women should not be included in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show because “the show is a fantasy” by tweeting a video of herself modeling lingerie. Nguyen argues in the tweet that trans women are capable of conveying fantasy.
Dragun Beauty, her make-up line, was announced in March 2019. In addition to the mainstream market, the cosmetic line is aimed at the transgender community. Nikita chose to launch her brand independently because all of her products are vegan and cruelty-free. Nguyen was interviewed about her make-up brand on the LGBT radio network Channel Q in June 2019, where she credited Dragun Beauty and its products to her journey as a trans woman building her brand. Nikita will star in her own Snapchat docuseries, “Nikita Unfiltered,” beginning in September 2019. The show follows Nguyen as she looks for love, pursues “a different path” in her career, and deals with fame as a trans woman.
