Her cool demeanor and distinct delivery earned her mentions in Esquire and Essence magazines, as well as in newspapers across the country, including The New York Times, The Detroit News, and The Atlanta Constitution. Vaughn’s first job in broadcasting was as a “desk assistant” or paid intern at WCBS Radio in New York, which at the time was an all-news station. When CBS launched the all-news format at its owned and operated station WEEI in 1974, she and several other members of the staff relocated to Boston.

Vaughn first appeared on television in 1979, at CBS affiliate WNAC, now WHDH-TV. Vaughn moved to Atlanta and WXIA-TV in 1982 to escape the harsh winters before joining CNNHN in December 1984. Vaughn resigned from CNNHN in June 1998 for a variety of reasons, including: 1) a desire for a break, and 2) a desire to focus more on her personal life. She joined the staff of WTKR-TV in Norfolk, Virginia in 1999, anchoring the 5 and 11 p.m. newscasts.
