Lyle Workman is a guitarist, composer, session, and touring musician, and music producer from the United States. In 1986, he released the eponymous Bourgeois Tagg album, and he is most known as the composer and bandleader for the Superbad soundtrack.

Workman has composed music for the films Superbad, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Good Boys, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Stand Up Guys, Win Win, Get Him to the Greek, Yes Man, Knocked Up (additional music), Overboard (2018), Bad Santa 2, American Reunion, 21 & Over, The Goods, The Interview (additional music), and Chef (additional music). His contributions to the Superbad soundtrack have received critical acclaim. He has played guitar and other instruments on a number of other soundtracks. He composed music for the Judd Apatow-produced TV programs Love and Crashing. The Bold Type, Sun Records, and Good Girls are among the other shows.

Workman was hired to play guitar (together with Jon Brion) on Jellyfish’s critically praised second album Spilt Milk in 1992-1993. Todd Rundgren fans will also recognize Workman as the lead guitarist on Rundgren’s albums Nearly Human and 2nd Wind, as well as the subsequent tours. Workman worked as the lead guitarist on Beck’s Midnight Vultures tours from 1999 to 2001, and he traveled with Sting on 2006’s Broken Music Tour, as well as at Live 8. Workman has also worked with Chad Fischer, the frontman of the American alternative rock band Lazlo Bane. Workman and Fischer collaborated on two songs, “Buttercup” and “View From The Pavement.”

On the band’s debut album, 11 Transistors, he played guitar. Workman later teamed up with Fischer once more, co-writing and performing the song “Miserable Life” for the film Little Manhattan. He has also recorded and toured extensively with Frank Black, performing on the albums Teenager of the Year, The Cult of Ray, Frank Black and The Catholics, and Oddballs, as well as being credited with “arranged by” credit on numerous songs on 2006’s Fast Man Raider Man. Lyle has worked as a studio musician on many rock and pop albums in Los Angeles with musicians such as Sting, Michael Buble, Sarah McLachlan, Ziggy Marley, Norah Jones, Bryan Adams, Sheryl Crow, Shakira, and They Might Be Giants.

Workman is recognized as a producer on Dutch singer ‘Ilse DeLange’s record Incredible, which had many number-one hits and multi-platinum sales in the Netherlands. Workman produced DeLange’s “Next To Me” album, which was released in September 2010. Purple Passages, Workman’s first instrumental “solo” album, was favorably received among musicians, with XTC’s Dave Gregory describing Workman as “a musician of consummate skill, creativity, and taste.”  Tabula Rasa (2001), his second solo album, was equally well appreciated. “Harmonic Crusader” was released in 2009, followed in 2021 by “Uncommon Measures.”
