At the age of 13, he invented and portrayed the character of Fred Figglehorn, a 6-year-old boy with anger management issues, and uploaded the videos on YouTube.

The first Fred video, made and acted by Lucas, was released to YouTube in late 2005. However, it was not the first character he attempted. Lucas founded JKL Productions with his twin cousins, Jon and Katie Smet, earlier that year, and has since experimented with several personas. However, none of the videos were viewed until 2005, when JKL productions posted the first video of Fred, titled “Fred on Halloween”. The role of 6-year-old Fred, who has a terrible home environment, quickly gained popularity and turned Lucas into an instant celebrity. By 2008, Fred had become such a successful show that Lucas created the private Fred channel.
However, shortly after, Lucas Cruikshank formally announced his departure from JKL productions and erased his individual videos from the channel. In January 2009, he created his own channel called “lucas”. In February 2009, he appeared as both Fred and himself in “iMeet Fred” on Nickelodeon’s ‘iCarly’. In the same year, he starred in the episode “Come Fail Away” of the American musical comedy television series Hannah Montana (2006–2011). Cruikshank elevated Fred’s character when he collaborated with Nickelodeon. Cruikshank shot “Fred: The Movie” in 2009, but instead of publishing it on YouTube, it premiered on Nickelodeon in September 2010.
Almost immediately following the conclusion of the Fred series, Lucas Cruikshank was cast as the titular character in another show on the same network, ‘Marvin Marvin’. However, this show was not a success and received low ratings, prompting its cancelation after only one season. Following this, Lucas Cruikshank began routinely posting videos on his own YouTube channel “lucas,” which today has over 3.3 million subscribers. He uploads new videos to his channel every Sunday and Wednesday and appears in his brother Jacob’s films. Aside from his YouTube career, he is currently assisting television networks with new show ideas and auditioning for TV and film parts.
