Saturday Night Live held a casting call in December 2013 to add at least one African American woman to the show, and Jones auditioned. Jones made an appearance on the Weekend Update part of Andrew Garfield’s May 3, 2014 program, when her remarks regarding her present dating issues and possible effectiveness as a breeding slave stirred criticism.

Jones participated in the 40th season’s first and third episodes, which were hosted by Chris Pratt and Bill Hader, respectively. Jones was elevated to the cast as a featured player on October 20, 2014, and made her official debut on the October 25, 2014 episode hosted by Jim Carrey. Jones became the show’s oldest cast member at the age of 47, surpassing Michael McKean and George Coe, who were 46 when they joined in 1994 and 1975, respectively.

Leslie Jones Stand-up

Jones got her start in stand-up comedy in college in 1987, when a friend entered her in a “Funniest Person on Campus” competition. Jones dropped out of school after winning the contest and moved to Los Angeles. She worked day jobs at Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles and UPS while performing at comedy clubs. Mother Love and Dave Chappelle, both comedians, pushed her to relocate to New York City to practice her craft. She stayed for over two years, appearing on BET’s ComicView before returning to Los Angeles. She appeared at The Comedy Store in West Hollywood, but her shows were met with negative feedback. She subsequently went on tour, opening for Jamie Foxx, who was booed by the crowd.

Jones stopped performing for three years after Foxx advised her to “live life for a little while” in order to get experience for her humor. She then performed in smaller clubs until 2010, when she began requesting spots at The Comedy Store and was able to acquire prime-time gigs for her show. Chris Rock watched her perform in 2012 and introduced her to some of “comedy’s biggest managers,” all of whom “didn’t get it.” The following year, Rock assisted Jones in getting an audition for Saturday Night Live, which she got.

Jones performed on Katt Williams’ It’s Pimpin’ Pimpin’ tour in 2008. Jones has secured a deal with Netflix for a 2020 stand-up special.
