She graduated from Crossroads, a college preparatory school in Santa Monica, in 1997. She got accepted to New York University but chose an acting career over an undergraduate degree.

Kate Hudson Almost Famous

She appeared as Penny Lane in the 2000 American comedy-drama film Almost Famous. In San Diego, young prodigy William Miller struggles to fit in and discovers that his widowed mother Elaine has lied to him about his age. Elaine’s stringent ban on rock music and fear of pop culture has a negative impact on her children, prompting William’s sister Anita to go to San Francisco and work as a flight attendant. William, aged fifteen, wants to be a rock journalist and is offered a $35 assignment to review a Black Sabbath gig in 1973. Backstage is closed to him until Stillwater comes, and he meets seasoned groupie Penny Lane, who refers to them as “band aids.”

Rolling Stone editor Ben Fong-Torres hires William to write an article about Stillwater and sends him on tour with the band. Tensions between Russell and lead singer Jeff Bebe surface, and William is welcomed into their inner group. Dennis is hired by the record label to manage venue and promoter issues, and Penny is gambled away to another band.

When William arrives at the Rolling Stone office in San Francisco, he is unable to complete the article. He contacts Lester Bangs, who counsels him to be truthful and unmerciful. The article is killed by Rolling Stone, hurting William. Anita agrees to drive William to their San Diego home, where their mother Elaine is delighted to see them both.
