Vittert worked as a reporter for WFTV-TV in Orlando, Florida, and anchored the weekend news at KDVR-TV in Denver, Colorado, in the 2000s. He has also worked at KATV-TV in Little Rock, AR, KNWA-TV in Fayetteville, AR, and WMTV-TV in Madison, WI. Vittert was nominated for an Emmy Award as a young reporter for clearing a police officer wrongfully accused of rape.

Vittert spent a month in Eastern Ukraine before moving to Washington, D.C. in 2014, as Russian-backed militias grabbed control of portions of the country. Vittert and his team were attacked by demonstrators outside the White House in Washington, D.C., while reporting the George Floyd protests. They were eventually chased away. Vittert said he and his team were beaten after a demonstrator recognized they worked for Fox News in an interview on Cavuto Live the next day.
