Kyle shot and killed two men on August 25, 2020, during unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin during Black Lives Matter protests that took place just one mile south of his home in Antioch, Illinois. He also took part in local police cadet programs and expressed his support for the Blue Lives Matter movement on social media. According to his attorney’s statement, Rittenhouse learned about a local business owner looking for assistance in defending his car dealership. Rittenhouse and his friend Dominick David therefore armed themselves with rifles and went to assist the business owner. Following that, five confrontations and subsequent shootings occurred shortly after clashes between police officers and protesters at Civic Center Park.

Rittenhouse can be seen sprinting with a fire extinguisher to extinguish a fire that had started in a dumpster near a gas station. During the first confrontation, Rittenhouse was pursued by a group, and a third party fired a gunshot into the sky. A man named Rosenbaum attempted to steal Rittenhouse’s rifle, but Kyle shot him four times, killing him. A man kicked Rittenhouse while he was fleeing at a second location. As a result, in a fit of rage, he fired two shots at him, both of which he missed. Rittenhouse was arrested and charged with multiple counts of homicide and unlawful use and possession of a firearm a few days later.

Rittenhouse joined the Grayslake Police Department’s Explorers program as a high school freshman, as well as the Antioch Fire Department’s cadet program, with the goal of becoming a paramedic or working in law enforcement.  He eventually dropped out and left Lakes Community High School altogether in 2018, after attending for one semester in 2017-2018. Rittenhouse has appeared on a number of podcasts, including the Blaze Media project You Are Here, hosted by Elijah Schaffer and Sydney Watson, on which he stated that attending protests is “not the best idea.” He also appeared on The Jenna Ellis Show, hosted by Jenna Ellis, a former Trump staffer. He expressed fear of harassment and said he was afraid to run errands on that show. He denied being a racist, domestic terrorist, or white supremacist, claiming that those who labeled him as such had attacked him. Rittenhouse also stated that he had attempted to contact President Joe Biden several times but had received no response, adding, “He still hasn’t responded.”

Republican lawmakers have publicly offered Rittenhouse multiple internships. Florida House Representative Matt Gaetz offered him an internship on November 17, 2021, two days before the jury’s decision. In response, Arizona House Representative Paul Gosar tweeted that he would arm-wrestle Gaetz for the opportunity to work as an intern with Rittenhouse. Rittenhouse announced the Media Accountability Project, also known as TMAP, in February 2022 during another interview on Tucker Carlson Tonight, saying: Rittenhouse launched a YouTube channel focusing on guns and the 2nd Amendment on October 16, 2022. His first video on the channel featured Rittenhouse firing a handgun and an automatic rifle, as well as a guest appearance by YouTube gun advocate Brandon Herrera.
