Kelli is his sister. He first moved to Dallas after high school, where he studied philosophy at Brookhaven College and became interested in religion and the healing arts. He then relocated to Austin, where he had planned to pursue his interest in acting by studying drama at the University of Texas at Austin, but his extreme shyness prevented him from doing so. He moved to New Orleans in his mid-twenties to pursue a degree in TV production and theater studies at Loyola University. Three of Douglas’ close friends were murdered in a restaurant robbery where they and Douglas both worked in 1996. This prompted him to depart from New Orleans.

Douglas, a member of Queer Eye’s “Fab Five,” has co-authored a book, appeared on a soundtrack CD and accompanying DVD based on the show, and has appeared on numerous magazine covers and TV talk shows. In 2004, he released Beautified, his own book on female grooming, and became a spokesperson and product advisor for L’Oréal. In 2004, he was invited back to speak at his alma mater, Loyola University New Orleans.

Douglas moved to New York City in 1999 and began working in sales for Aveda before assisting in the establishment of the Aveda Institute, a hairstyling and grooming school. He enrolled in its cosmetology program, and after graduating first in his class, he worked as a colorist at the New York-based hair salon Arrojo Studio. He also started working on the makeover shows What Not to Wear and While You Were Out. In 2002, an Arrojo client informed him of a casting call for a makeover show.

Kyan sent the producers a photo of himself as well as a brief bio he’d written. They called him in for an audition and quickly hired him as the “Grooming Guru” on the show. He took over as host of TLC’s Ten Years Younger (beginning with the fourth season) in 2009. Queer Eye won an Emmy for Outstanding Reality Program in 2004 and was nominated for it again in 2005. Douglas received the Humanitarian Award from the HRC in 2006 for his work with a number of charities, including the HRC, DIFFA, and AmFAR.
