Key had two half-brothers through his biological father, one of them being comic book writer Dwayne McDuffie. Key only found out about his half-siblings after they had both perished. He appeared as Josh Skinner, an orthopedic surgeon from New York City and Melissa’s boyfriend, later husband in the American musical comedy television series Schmigadoon!. Melissa and Josh, two New York doctors, go on a backpacking trip to try to mend their broken relationship in the first season, only to find themselves constantly squabbling. They become disoriented and eventually discover a mythical town called Schmigadoon, which is permanently imprisoned in a Golden Age-style musical, and quickly learn that they cannot leave the town unless they find “true love.” Both the title and the concept are a spoof of the 1947 musical Brigadoon.
In season 2, Melissa and Josh, now married, are bored with their lives as doctors in New York City; they search for Schmigadoon but instead find Schmicago, a world that pays satirical homage to sexy, dark 1960s and 1970s musicals; to escape, they are told, they must reach a happy ending. Schmicago, the setting’s name, is a parody of the 1975 musical Chicago. The final episode, like the first, goes beyond the historical period of the rest of season 2 to reference later musical trends.
