Cengel wrote about her Central European life and career in her 2019 book From Chernobyl With Love: Reporting from the Ruins of the Soviet Union, for which she received the IPPY and Foreword INDIE awards. After returning to the United States, Cengel began working as a general assignment features reporter for the Louisville Courier-Journal. Her series on the families of Sudan’s Lost Boys won second place in feature writing at the Society of Professional Journalists’ 2005 Green Eyeshade Awards. Cengel teaches journalism at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Berkeley Extension.
