Julie Etchingham Career
Etchingham began her career at BBC Midlands as a presenter on Midlands Today, but after moving to London, she quickly moved on to present national programs. Her BBC credits include Breakfast News, Newsround, and the corporation’s long-running Holiday program. Etchingham joined Sky News in 2002 and hosted several shows for the channel, including Sky News Today. She was also an on-again, off-again presenter on Five News after Sky took over as Five’s news provider in January 2005.
On October 31, 2007, ITV announced that Etchingham would take over as host of the relaunched News at Ten with Sir Trevor McDonald in January 2008. The show returned on January 14th. In June 2009, it was reported in the media that Pakistan’s President, Asif Ali Zardari, had stopped a plane from leaving the country after learning Etchingham was running late following an interview between the two. It was announced in October 2009 that Etchingham would host a relaunched Tonight program beginning in early 2010 – with the show airing once a week on Thursday nights.
Etchingham and Phillip Schofield co-hosted ITV’s coverage of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding in April 2011. In April 2012, it was announced that she and Schofield would host the BBC’s coverage of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June. In March 2013, she traveled to Rome for ITV News coverage of Pope Francis’ election. Etchingham was announced as the first female to chair a televised leaders debate for ITV ahead of the 2015 general election in March 2015. Later, she co-hosted ITV’s coverage of the general election with Tom Bradby. News at Ten relaunched in October 2015, returning to a single newscaster format, with former political editor Tom Bradby taking over as the show’s main presenter. Etchingham co-hosted ITV’s coverage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in May 2018 with Phillip Schofield, as well as The ITV Leaders’ Debate ahead of the 2017 General Election in May 2017.
