He is the grandson of Herman Platt, philanthropist, electronics industry businessman, and Jewish leader, and the great-grandson of Benjamin Platt, founder and proprietor of the Platt Music Corporation chain of stores. Flagg is the grandson of American (Austrian-born) fashion industry executive and designer Edith Flagg, who was one of the first designers in the United States to import polyester as a fashion cloth.

Flagg began his career in real estate while still in high school, working for real estate broker Bruce Nelson at the John Bruce Nelson firm in Bel Air, Maryland. Throughout his real estate career, Flagg has set numerous records, including the largest transaction in Brentwood Park history and a $25 million home sale in Beverly Hills. He has also served as the listing agent for prestigious houses such as Merv Griffin’s Bel Air estate and Dorothy Chandler’s Hancock Park estate. He has also sold residences to celebrities such as Adam Levine. Flagg began working at Keller Williams Westside in Los Angeles, California, in 2009, where he established “Josh Flagg Estates.” According to Forbes, Flagg has sold over $1 billion in real estate.
Flagg and two other agents, Madison Hildebrand, and Chad Rogers, were chosen to star in a reality TV series about their real estate businesses in 2006. They began production for Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles, which premiered on Bravo in August 2006. The sitcom continued with the original cast until Season 4, when Josh Altman joined Flagg and Hildebrand on the show. In 2012, Flagg launched ‘Star Maps,’ a mobile app that has a list of hundreds of homes affiliated with celebrities in the Los Angeles area. The app uses GPS to guide users and tourists to well-known estates or celebrity residences, providing information about the home and its celebrity ownership that is cross-referenced with research from the city’s public records. In 2013, Melissa Rivers honored Flagg with the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust’s Next Generation award. Flagg is a collector of fine art, and rare automobiles, and one of the country’s largest collectors of Billy Haines furniture. He has visited over sixty countries and has a passion for architecture and interior design.
Flagg lives in Beverly Hills, California, and bought a micro-estate above the Sunset Strip from Jeffrey Katzenberg’s son, writer/producer David Katzenberg, in January 2013. In 2015, he sold the home to Nicolas Pakzad, the son of designer Bijan Pakzad. Flagg purchased the estate of Tony Award-winning producer Michael Filerman in June 2015.
