Pera developed the Adult Swim Infomercial Joe Talks You to Sleep, in which he is known for his slow, “grandfatherly” delivery and his love for wearing sweaters. This was followed by an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers and another Adult Swim special, Pera Helps You Find the Perfect Christmas Tree. Because of the success of those programs (all produced by Chestnut Walnut, which he and Conner O’Malley founded), Pera developed a television series for Adult Swim, Joe Talks with You, which premiered on May 20, 2018. On March 28, 2017, he appeared on the talk show Conan, and on December 4, 2019, he appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Joe published A Bathroom Book for People Not Pooping or Peeing but Using the Bathroom as an Escape in 2021, illustrated by Joe Bennett. Joe and Chestnut Walnut released Drifting Off With Joe, a podcast to assist people to go to sleep, on January 31, 2023. It’s reminiscent of his “Talks You To Sleep” series. Every month on the first Sunday, an episode is produced that includes a guest interview, a guest musician, and a philosophical monologue on a specific theme.
