He has also appeared in Star Wars, Dexter, and from 2012 to 2014, he played Nero Padilla in Sons of Anarchy. In the NBC drama series, Smits also played Elijah Strait.

Cornelis Leendert Smits, his father, was born in Suriname and was of Dutch origin. Emilina (née Pola), Smits’ mother, was born in Peuelas, Puerto Rico. He grew up in a working-class neighborhood with his two sisters, Yvonne and Diana. He relocated to Puerto Rico for a few years when he was ten years old. He had never spoken Spanish before. Smits used to be an athlete. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in 1980 from Brooklyn College and an MFA in 1982 from Cornell University.

Before his driving duty, he had attained the level of Detective Second Grade. Simone and Andy were close friends, but Bobby would not let Andy get away with racist remarks. Simone worked his first homicide as a detective in late 1979, and they developed a solid bond.

Simone began dating Diane Russell, another detective from the 15th Precinct. In season 5, they married, but Diane miscarried.
