Jay Leno NBC – The Tonight Show

In March 1977, Leno debuted on the television show ‘The Tonight Show’. In the next decade he would go on to make several appearances in numerous television shows and films including ‘Good Times ‘, ‘Holmes & Yo-Yo’, ‘Fun with Dick and Jane’, ‘American Hot Wax’, ‘Silver Bears’, ‘Almost Heaven’, ‘Going Nowhere’, ‘One Day at a Time’, ‘Americathon’, ‘Polyester’, ‘The Wild One’, ‘Alice’, ‘Feminine Mistake’, ‘Laverne & Shirley’ and ‘Late Night with David Letterman’. After numerous successful appearances in various productions, Leno finally got his big break as the host of ‘The Tonight Show,’ replacing Johnny Carson in 1992. He would eventually become the show’s soul for nearly two decades.

During his tenure on ‘The Tonight Show,’ Leno was involved in Michael Jackson’s 2005 trial on child molestation charges. He was one of the few celebrities who testified for the defense. Because of his involvement, he was forced to refrain from making Jackson jokes on his show, which had previously been a daily feature. Leno and the scriptwriters took advantage of the order and found a way to allow other people on the show to do the jokes. These appearances were challenged in court, but Leno and the production team prevailed. The court permitted them to make jokes but prohibited them from discussing Jackson’s testimony.

Following 17 years on ‘The Tonight Show,’ Leno was replaced by Conan O’Brien in 2009 due to Conan’s contract with NBC. After the completion of the 2010 Winter Olympics, Leno returned to host the show on March 1, 2010, replacing Conan. In addition to hosting his successful show, Leno has worked as a voice artist for various animation films, as well as playing bit parts in films and making guest appearances.
