Herb Boyd Biography
Herb Boyd is a journalist, teacher, author, and activist from the United States. His columns appear on a regular basis in the New York Amsterdam News. He teaches black studies at City College of New York and New Rochelle College.

He helped develop the first black studies programs at the institution in the late 1960s and went on to teach there for 12 years. He also co-created and taught the first jazz studies curriculum at the Oberlin Conservatory. Boyd’s writing has also appeared in The Black Scholar, The City Sun, Down Beat, Emerge, and Essence, in addition to the Amsterdam News. He has been honored by the National Association of Black Journalists and the New York Association of Black Journalists with awards. In 2014, Boyd was recognized into the National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame. Brotherman, which Boyd co-edited with Robert L. Allen, won the American Book Award in 1995. Boyd was the managing editor of the now-defunct online news service The Black World Today.

In 2009, his biography Baldwin’s Harlem was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Boyd received the Outstanding Career Achievement Award at the James Aronson Social Justice Journalism Awards at Hunter College in 2018. Elza Dinwiddie-Boyd, a writer and lecturer, was credited with editing Boyd’s published novels.
