Gloria Reuben was born in Toronto, Ontario, to classical vocalist Pearl Avis (Mills) and engineer Cyril George Reuben. Her parents are both Jamaican-born. Her father was largely Jewish (with Ashkenazi and Sephardi backgrounds), although he also had some African ancestry; her mother is predominantly African. Her father died while she was little. Reuben was featured on a section of Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s television genealogy show Finding Your Roots.
Reuben was raised as one of six children. Her older half-brother, Denis Simpson, an actor and children’s television host, died in 2010. Her younger brother, David, died in 1988. She portrayed Physician Assistant Jeanie Boulet from the first to the sixth seasons. She began as a recurring guest star in the first season and early episodes of the second season before being upgraded to series regular beginning with the second season episode “Days Like This”.
Jeanie originally appeared in season 1 as a recurring character. She was the physical therapist engaged by Dr. Peter Benton to look after his elderly mother. Jeanie, who was married at the time, quickly developed a romantic relationship with Benton, but it ended when she was unable to make a choice regarding her marriage.
She returned as a series regular a few episodes later in season 2, as a new medical assistant in the County General ER. Weaver organizes a search party for Anne Glass, but Marina shuts him down for fear of the public reacting poorly to the alien hybrid infant. Hal, a hunter killer, murders Marina, and Tom resigns as president. In Charleston, John Pope regrets the success of his business, as soldiers arrive on Marina’s instructions to relocate his store.
After President Benjamin Hathaway recovers, Marina’s dictatorial demeanor is noticed, and she suspects herself of being the mole in Charleston. Following Hathaway’s death, Anthony, Weaver, and Marina agree to keep the case quiet while searching for the true mole.
