He began acting at Crestwood High School in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, where he was a member of the theatre club. He later attended Oakland University and majored in musical theater. He appeared on Days of Our Lives and Shake It Up in 2010. In December 2012, he co-starred with Ralph Macchio in the Lifetime film Holiday Spin as Blake, a rebellious kid forced to live with his father when his mother is killed in a car accident. He was hired as Tanner in Disney’s musical Teen Beach Movie in 2013, playing a stylish yet vacuous surfer who is “a cross between Frankie Avalon and Link from Hairspray.”
Jeffrey Hornaday directed the film, which was shot in Puerto Rico and initially aired in July 2013. He appeared in the second part of The Fosters’ first season as a recurrent character. In 2016, he co-starred with James Franco and Christian Slater as homosexual porn star Brent Corrigan in the film King Cobra, and he played Link Larkin in the NBC television broadcast of Hairspray Live! In February 2017, he starred as Brady Mannion in the horror-thriller film Don’t Hang Up, which was released in theaters. Clayton also performed as Luke alongside Al Pacino and Judith Light in a six-week run of Dotson Rader’s play God Looked Away at the Pasadena Playhouse in 2017.
