He played a pivotal role in CNN’s coverage of the German Bundestag elections in both 2009 and 2013, while in 2014 he commented on the 25th anniversary of the collapse of the Berlin Wall, bringing his own family’s perspective of the incident to bear in his coverage.
He also reported widely on the ongoing conflict in Syria, heading to Damasco, Homs, Aleppo and several other locations in the war town country. He was also the first foreign journalist to write from Damasco just days after chemical weapons entered rebel zones at the start of US military action in 2013. Pleitgen was also on hand in Aleppo when the city dropped back into the control of Syrian government forces at the end of 2016. In 2011, Pleitgen was a key correspondent during the Arab world uprising, reporting from Egypt that the revolt that finally overthrew Mubarak’s government erupted as part of the Emmy-winning team for its live coverage of the Cairo demonstrations, and one of the first journalists to travel into Libya’s besieged city of Misrata.
Pleitgen has traveled undercover to Myanmar, which was then governed by a brutal junta, multiple times to report on the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis in 2008 and the flawed elections and release of pro-democracy protester Aung San Suu Kyi in 2010.

Pleitgen also spent time writing for RTL and TV Berlin. Pleitgen studied North American Studies at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University in Bonn and the Free University of Berlin, where he delivered his master’s thesis on American journalism practices. He also spent one year studying at the School of Journalism at New York University, and in 2004 received a fellowship at the Centre for Cultural Diplomacy in San Fernando Valley, USA. Pleitgen was also awarded the 2005 Arthur F. Burns Fellowship, which he spent at the International Center for Journalists in Atlanta, Georgia.
