He has written thirteen books of poetry, two autobiographies, and edited three poetry anthologies. His poetry has appeared in a variety of magazines, including Beltway Poetry Quarterly, Poet Lore, and Sojourner. Miller founded and directed the Ascension Poetry Reading programs, which is one of Washington’s oldest literary programs. He served as director of Howard University’s African-American Resource Center for over 40 years, beginning in 1974. Miller has taught at a variety of institutions, including American University, Emory and Henry College, George Mason University, Harpeth Hall School, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He was also a core faculty member of Bennington College’s writing seminars. He worked on Operation Homecoming for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

He is currently the board chair of the Institute for Policy Studies. He also serves on the boards of Split This Rock and the Writer’s Center, and since 2002, he has been co-editor of Poet Lore magazine, the oldest poetry journal in the United States. He previously chaired the Humanities Council of Washington, D.C., and has served on the boards of the AWP, the Edmund Burke School, the PEN American Center, the PEN/Faulkner Foundation, and the Washington Area Lawyer for the Arts (WALA). He hosts WPFW’s On the Margin, a weekly morning radio show. Marion Barry, the Mayor of Washington, D.C., where Miller resides, declared September 28, 1979, “E. Ethelbert Miller Day.” On May 21, 2001, the Mayor of Jackson, Tennessee, announced “E. Ethelbert Miller Day”. Miller’s papers are housed at Emory and Henry College and The George Washington University.
