McManus worked on the Stanford Daily during his undergraduate years. He spent three years as a foreign correspondent for United Press International, starting in Brussels. He joined the Los Angeles Times in 1978 and has reported from Los Angeles, the Middle East, Central America, and New York. In 1983, he moved to the Times’ Washington, D.C. desk, where he reported on the US State Department and the White House. He succeeded Jack Nelson as bureau head in 1996. After thirteen years as bureau chief, he allegedly informed colleagues that he had “long ago asked for a new assignment.” When the financially distressed Tribune Company dissolved the Los Angeles Times bureau in favor of a single Washington office for all of its publications in November 2008, he became a columnist there.
Mr. McManus has contributed to Foreign Policy, Time, Sports Illustrated, and the London Daily Express. He frequently appears on the PBS commentary show Washington Week. He has covered all presidential elections since 1984. In January 2008, he moderated the presidential primary debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in Los Angeles.
