Donnie Dunagan Career

When he was three and a half years old, he won a $100 talent contest. After being spotted by a studio talent scout, the family relocated to Hollywood, where Dunagan acted in a number of films and quickly became the primary provider for his family. After voicing the titular character in Walt Disney’s Bambi (1942), he resigned from voice acting. By the age of 13, Dunagan was living in a boarding home and working as a lathe operator. He joined the Marine Corps in 1952, when he was 18 years old. He became the Marine Corps’ youngest-ever drill instructor and served three tours in Vietnam, where he was wounded numerous times, before retiring as a major in 1977. Dunagan’s service earned him a Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts. Dunagan kept his acting profession hidden while serving in the Marines, but in 2004, he was discovered and extensively interviewed by horror film historian Tom Weaver for a special “Donnie Dunagan issue” of Video Watchdog magazine. He is retired and currently resides in San Angelo, Texas, with his wife.

He concealed the fact that he was the voice of Bambi in Bambi (1942) while serving in the United States Marine Corps. He was afraid of being nicknamed “Bambi”. He claimed that after voicing and watching the film Bambi (1942) as a little actor, he could never bring himself to shoot an animal. He’d done a lot of shooting as a lifetime US Marine, but he’d never shot an animal before. He was the Marine Corps’ youngest drill instructor in history.
