Dick Johnson is an American news anchor and reporter who presently works as a street reporter and weekend anchor at WMAQ-TV. He began his career as a reporter and anchor at WMAQ-TV in 2002. He has won various prizes, including the Emmy Award and the DuPont-Columbia Award (the broadcast equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize).

In 2006, he produced Oliver!, and a year later, in the summer of 2007, he produced and starred in Annie as Franklin D. Roosevelt. Johnson hosted the 5 p.m. news at KDFW-TV in Dallas, where he was also a political reporter, before moving to Chicago in 1982. He began his journalistic career with WTHR-TV in Indianapolis. Johnson’s work has earned him national and regional Emmys, a Dupont-Columbia, and, most recently, a Peabody Award as part of an NBC5 team led by Carol Marin.
During the murder attempt on President Ronald Reagan, Johnson was on board Air Force Two with then-Vice President George H.W. Bush. Ryan White’s valiant battle with AIDS, the return of the Iranian hostages at West Point, the Ethiopian famine, the battle to create Comiskey Park and the United Center, and the fight over Chicago school reform were all topics he covered. Dick broke the story of the “Great Loop Flood,” covered boxer Mike Tyson’s rape trial, and unearthed the Chicago connection in Andrew Cunanan’s murder spree. Johnson has covered every type of election campaign, from the president to the mayor.
He has also appeared in NBC’s “Chicago Fire”, the hit movie “Barbershop 2” and the 2009 film “Chicago Overcoat”. While earning a degree in political science at DePauw University, Johnson served as News Director of its radio station WGRE. More recently, he was Chairman of the Board of External Advisors for DePauw’s Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media.
