Wise originally appeared in episodes of television shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, The Good Wife, and Boardwalk Empire. She made her cinematic debut in the 2007 movie Spinning into Butter, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, and went on to play secondary roles in Steam (2007) and Precious (2009). She starred in the independent romantic comedy How to Tell You’re a Douchebag, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The following year, she had a recurring role in the WGN historical drama Underground and co-starred with Sanaa Lathan in the Fox miniseries Shots Fired. In 2017, she played the main character in the Netflix comedy-drama series She’s Gotta Have It, which was canceled after two seasons in 2019.

She was cast in Disney’s Captain Marvel in 2018, but had to drop out owing to scheduling issues with her Netflix series. That year, she participated in the Stella Meghie-directed comedy picture The Weekend. In 2019, she co-starred alongside Gina Rodriguez and Brittany Snow in the Netflix romantic comedy film Someone Great, in which she and a pantsless Rodriguez sang and danced to Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts,” making the song more popular and reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She later starred in the comedy-drama Fatherhood (2021) alongside Kevin Hart and Alfre Woodard, as well as Jurassic World Dominion.
