Storyline
The show is set in the early 1990s in Three Rivers, Connecticut. Thomas Birdsey, Dominick Birdsey’s identical twin, suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. Thomas is able to live his life in relative peace and work at a coffee shop thanks to medication, but he suffers from severe episodes of his illness on occasion. Thomas cuts off his own hand while at a public library, believing he is making a sacrificial protest that will end the Gulf War. Dominick supports him through the subsequent decision not to try to reattach the hand, and works on his behalf to get him out of what he knows is an inadequate and depressing hospital for the dangerously mentally ill.
