In 1985, she began reading news at a hybrid television and radio station in Brandon, Manitoba, and went on to report for stations in Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, Vancouver, and Toronto. By the late 1990s, she had been approached by national networks in both Canada athe United States, and she had joined NBC News. During his time at NBC, Friesen covered stories from London as well as the Middle East, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in Karachi. As a correspondent for NBC’s coverage of the 2008 United States presidential election, she received a News & Documentary Emmy Award. Friesen took over as Global News’ Global National anchor in 2010, succeeding Kevin Newman. Friesen was the third full-time female news anchor in Canada, and she won the Gemini Award for best news anchor. She also hosts the network’s newsmagazine series The New Reality in addition to Global National. She then returned to Manitoba to attend Red River College, where she worked as a waitress when she was younger.
