Family – Education

Belinda Jo Carlisle was born in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, to Harold Carlisle, a gas station employee, and his wife Joanne (née Thompson), a housewife. Carlisle was born nine months after her mother met her father, who was 20 years her senior at the age of 18. She was called after her mother’s favorite movie, Johnny Belinda (1948). She is of English, Irish, and Native American origin. Carlisle was the first of seven siblings, including three brothers and three sisters. Carlisle’s father abandoned the family when she was five years old.

Her mother eventually married Walt Kurczeski, who Carlisle describes as an alcoholic and with whom she had a turbulent relationship. She took on his surname during her high school years. Carlisle’s family moved frequently as she grew up, from Simi Valley to Reseda, before settling in Burbank when she was seven. Carlisle’s family relocated again during her childhood, this time to Thousand Oaks, California, where she attended Colina Junior High School as a third-string guard on the boys’ basketball team and subsequently Newbury Park High School as a cheerleader. She enrolled in night school at a beauty college but dropped out after one year.

Husband – Children

Carlisle had a two-year romance with Bill Bateman, the Blasters’ drummer, in the early 1980s. She unexpectedly ended her relationship with Bateman because she had been seeing Mike Marshall of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Her cocaine use had a bad impact on these relationships.

Carlisle married political operative and film producer Morgan Mason, the son of actor James Mason and actress Pamela Mason, in 1986. They have one son, born in 1992. Following the 1994 Northridge earthquake, Carlisle and her family relocated to Fréjus, south-eastern France. They lived between there and the United States. In 2017, the pair relocated to Bangkok, Thailand. They will be living in Mexico City in 2023.

Heaven on Earth

Heaven on Earth marks her second solo studio album. The musical style of 1987’s Heaven on Earth was slickly produced 1980s power pop, as opposed to the 1960s-influenced pop of Carlisle’s debut studio album. MCA released it in the United States, while Virgin Records did the same in the UK. The album became a Top 5 bestseller in the United Kingdom and Australia, and it was nominated for a Grammy.

The album’s first single, “Heaven Is a Place on Earth,” topped the single charts in the United States and the United Kingdom, while the song’s dance remix also topped the Billboard dance chart in the United States. The advertising film was directed by Diane Keaton, an Academy Award-winning American actress.

Diane Warren’s “I Get Weak” was the album’s second single, peaking at No. 2 in the United States and No. 10 in the United Kingdom. The album’s third song, “Circle in the Sand,” was also a Top 10 smash in the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany. “World Without You” was another UK smash. Following the album’s success, Carlisle proceeded on the Good Heavens global tour, which sold out London’s Wembley Arena.

Carlisle’s follow-up to the success of Heaven on Earth was Runaway Horses, which debuted on October 23, 1989. The album peaked at number five in both Australia and the United Kingdom, and it was certified double platinum in Australia, platinum in the United Kingdom, and platinum in Canada.

Mad About You

“Mad About You” is American singer Belinda Carlisle’s debut solo single. It was written by Paula Jean Brown, James Whelan, and Mitchel Young Evans, and produced by Michael Lloyd for Carlisle’s debut solo album, Belinda. The record was published in 1986 as a CD single (one of the first to be marketed), a 7-inch single, and a 12″ single. It was her first hit since leaving the Go-Go’s, reaching at number three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 (where it remained for 21 weeks) and number one on the Canadian Singles Chart.

Carlisle married Morgan Mason, who appears with Belinda in the “Mad About You” video, just over three weeks before the single’s release. Andy Taylor (of Duran Duran) performed the song’s guitar solo and also appears in the video.

Paula Jean Brown (who joined the Go-Go’s as bass guitarist after Jane Wiedlin left) co-wrote the song with Jim Whelan, while Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffey provided backup vocals. “Mad About You” was one of the tracks considered for the Go-Go’s fourth (unrecorded) album. The Go-Go’s disbanded, and “Mad About You” and two other songs co-written by Paula Jean Brown appeared on Belinda. The single’s B-side, “I Never Wanted a Rich Man,” was also included on Carlisle’s debut long-playing album (it ended Side 1 on the vinyl release). The extended version of “Mad About You,” which was initially on the A-side of the 12″ single, was later included on Virgin’s album compact disc re-release in 2003.
