Claudia Puig is an American film reviewer and entertainment journalist. She was the chief film reviewer at USA Today before becoming a staff writer at the Los Angeles Times. She is presently the president of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) and a critic for NPR’s Film Week.

Claudia Puig Career

Claudia began her journalism career in 1986 as a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times, where she worked for 11 years covering local news. She joined USA Today in 1997 as an entertainment writer, and was later elevated to film critic in 2001 and chief film critic in 2005. Puig also presented the USA Today video series The Screening Room while there. Claudia announced her departure from USA Today in 2015, saying she was “excited to embark on new adventures,” and thanking her readers for their support. Claudia began working as a program director at different film festivals in 2015, including the Napa Valley Film Festival, the Mendocino Film Festival, FilmFest919 in Chapel Hill, and the AFI Film Festival as Senior Programmer.

Claudia teaches a college course on Media Diversity and has worked at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a speechwriter and diversity consultant. Puig is a film critic for NPR’s Film Week, as well as a contributor to NPR Morning Edition and All Things Considered. She also writes for The Wrap and AARP magazine, and is a frequent moderator for entertainment business events and Q&As across the country. Claudia was recently  mentioned in a Los Angeles Times story as one of 14 media critics working to make media more inclusive, and in Indiewire as one of 20 Latinos making a difference in indie movies. Claudia Puig was named programming director of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in 2023.
