Lowe began his acting career in the 1980s, appearing in several television films. Lowe costarred with Charlie Sheen in the 1984 CBS drama Silence of the Heart. In 1988, he costarred with Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Urich in the made-for-TV picture April Morning, which recreated the Battle of Lexington during the American Revolutionary War. Lowe portrayed the title character in Spencer, a short-lived sitcom that he quit after six episodes. From 1991 until 1993, he appeared in Life Goes On. Lowe played recurrent roles on Melrose Place, Popular, Now and Again, and ER, as well as guest appearances on Touched by an Angel, Superman, CSI: Miami, and Medium.

Lowe has appeared in several feature films, including Nobody’s Perfect, True Blood, Quiet Days in Hollywood, Floating, and Unfaithful. He played legendary musician John Denver in the 2000 television film Take Me Home. That year, he also wrote and directed the short film The Audition. In 2007, Lowe made his feature film directorial debut with Beautiful Ohio. Lowe has directed episodes for Bones, Brothers and Sisters, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Hack, Without a Trace, and Pretty Little Liars.
