Crawford is best known for a continuing series of reports on WHAS-TV titled “On the Road,” which is a localized version of Charles Kuralt’s CBS series of the same name. The segment was later syndicated as “Sideroads” to other Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio television stations. Crawford worked as a news reporter for the station prior to his “On the Road” series. He began his radio career as a news reporter at WAKY in Louisville and later moved to WCKY in Cincinnati, Ohio. He then worked as a reporter for WHAS Radio and Television while the stations were still owned by The Courier-Journal. Crawford left WHAS in 1979 to work as a columnist for The Courier-Journal newspaper in Kentucky.

Crawford was also the first host of Kentucky Life, an Emmy Award-winning television series that aired on Kentucky Educational Television from September 1995 to the summer of 1999. He has three books, all of which are compilations of his columns: “Crawford’s Journal” in 1986, “Kentucky Stories” in 1994, and “Kentucky Footnotes” in 2010. Crawford is still writing the back page column “Byron Crawford’s Kentucky” for Kentucky Living magazine. Crawford was named the Kentucky Association of Electric Cooperatives’ 2017 Distinguished Rural Kentuckian. Eric Crawford, Crawford’s son, was a sports columnist for The Courier-Journal until 2012, when he left to work for WDRB television.
