Bryshere Yazuan Gray is an American actor and rapper, best known for his role as Hakeem Lyon in the Fox primetime musical drama television series Empire. He is also recognized for his role as Michael Bivins in the 2017 BET miniseries The New Edition Story.

He started using his talent as a street musician to make money and support his single mother with their costs. He also worked at Pizza Hut, and he utilized the money he earned there to fund and produce his first music video before being fired for producing music at work. His efforts eventually resulted in a relationship with manager Charlie Mack. Gray told Cosmopolitan in February of 2015.
Charlie Mack introduced Bryshere Gray to Lee Daniels, co-creator and executive producer of ‘Empire’. He submitted a video audition for Daniels before being sent to Los Angeles for a second audition with Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson. Gray later admits to being “blown away” because he had expected only the director, Danny Strong, to be present. Mack also introduced Yazz to Will Smith and Jamie Foxx, both of whom he has admired since boyhood.
After the project was picked up by Fox, the pilot was filmed in March 2014 in Chicago. On May 6, 2014, the network ordered a full season for its 2014-15 U.S. network television programming.
The second season of the show premiered on September 23, 2015, with the third on September 21, 2016. The show got renewed for a fourth season on January 11, 2017. Beside Daniels and Strong, Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo also serve as executive producers. In an interview with ‘Hollywood Reporter’ regarding the series, Daniels stated, “I wanted to make a black ‘Dynasty’. “You sit there and go, ‘No, this (crap) didn’t! Oh, (expletive) God!”
This was Gray’s first acting role. Hakeem Lyon, his character, is the youngest son of hip-hop tycoon Lucious (Howard) and his ex-wife Cookie (Henson).
Yazz has voiced various singles in the show’s three seasons to far, including ‘Drip Drop’, ‘You’re So Beautiful’ (season 1), ‘Chasing the Sky’ (season 2 Volume 2), and ‘Special’ (season 3). He is working on a project with Timbaland (executive music producer of ‘Empire’) that will be released by ‘Columbia Records.’ Gray plays Kholi Styles in the upcoming film ‘Canal Street’. He is also collaborating with Bille Woodruff on his directorial attempt, ‘Honey 4’.
